An event that occurred during my lifetime and had a monumental effect on my life, and the lives of many other people my age was the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001. This event divided my life into two significant periods, because before the destruction of the Twin Towers I can honestly say I paid no attention to what was happening around me. I had very little knowledge of what was going on in my immediate world, yet alone the larger world around me. At the time I was only in middle school, so I guess it makes sense that I was not interested in politics or events that were happening internationally. Regardless, the terrorist attacks on September 11 impacted my life and drastically changed my outlook on the rest of the world. To be completely honest, I was shocked that such an event could occur in our country. This event was important to me because it changed the way I viewed our country and the world. Before the attacks I had always thought of the United States as such a strong, powerful country where nothing as destructive and devastating as this event would occur. September 11 made me realize there was a lot going on in the world that I knew nothing about. Apart from the more obvious implications the attacks had on my life, such as stricter security when traveling, they also encouraged me to become more knowledgeable about current events. Although I am not always as up-to-date on events as I would like, this particular event pushed me to discover what was happening in the world and ask questions when I did not understand. Although I am by no means happy about what happened on September 11, I am thankful that it made me want to be more aware of what is happening in the world.
